On the 7. and 8. of December the Norwegian Research School of Technology arranged a PhD workshop at campus Grimstad at the University of Agder. Jon Y. Hardeberg, Raju Shrestha, and Steven Le Moan from the Colorlab attended the workshop, where the PhD students presented their work. Steven Le Moan says: "It allowed some of us to realize that, even though we don't belong to the same scientific communities, even though we don't always use the same words to describe our work, we share the same ideas and face the same challenges".

Steven Le Moan summarizes workshop as following:

I believe it is safe to say that many PhD student have, at one point of their project, felt like a loner, some kind of an outlier, working on a topic so specific that not even their supervisors understand so well anymore. Indeed, as time goes, research scopes go more and more narrow and communication between fields becomes more and more challenging. Therefore, it is sometimes good to take some perspective and have a look at what is being done "outside the box". This PhD-workshop that took place in Grimstad this december 2011 was a great opportunity to get a breath of fresh air. Not only because of the charm of this cosy city by the sea, but mainly because the participants were able to listen to very interesting presentations from various fields of computer science (not to mention another session focused on energy). It allowed some of us to realize that, even though we don't belong to the same scientific communities, even though we don't always use the same words to describe our work, we share the same ideas and face the same challenges. It took me an almost 8 hours trip to realize that Hai, working just a few meters from my office but part of another group of research (NISlab), had very close research interests to my own, only for different applications. Therefore I am personally very much looking forward to another such meeting in the near future.
