Aim

Give the student a general working knowledge of digital image processing and presentation techniques, with particular relevance to medical applications.

Content

- The digital image: Image capture, formats, resolution, signal-to-noise, contrast, image quality.
- Image presentation: Screen, the eye, viewing conditions, perception
- Image processing: Pixel operations, histograms, filtering, edge detection, geometrical operations, Fourier analysis, etc.
- Image analysis: Feature extraction, pattern recognition and classification, examples from Computer Aided Radiology, etc.
- Glimpses of medical imaging research (such as automatic recognition and interpretation, and computer aided radiology (CAR).)
- Image processing software; General and PACS-based
