By drawing on several approaches to the construction of information architectures the students shall after completion of the course be able to contribute in a constructive way in the development of rational and user-friendly information architectures for commercial as well as public web sites. The course introduces a variety of principles for categorising and organising information, buliding access structures, and the design of devices for navigation and search. Information architecture is today a central domain of knowledge for the development of large and complex web sites, demanding e-commerce projects and interactive web services. It is obvious that the information architecture constitutes a crucial condition for the effectivity and usability of a web site.


- Classification: hierarchical and faceted approaches
- Indexing: automatic methods, intellectual methods, thesaurus building
- Information retrieval: indexing, query languages, matching, ranking, boolean operators, metadata
- Information structures: sequential, matrix, hierarchical, hyper
- Topic maps
- Social navigation in information space

Study MethodsGroup assignment with formative-iterative assessment.
AssessmentSummative assessment at the end of the semester: Passed / failed. The project will then be included in a portfolio for final summative graded assessment at the end of the third and final year with internal and external examiners (applies only for Bachelor in media design; grades A–F).
