Course Description MAS1011 - Design Materials (2003/2004)

The aim of the course is to provide a basic understanding of the relationship between structure, properties, selection and processing and of engineering materials.

METALLIC MATERIALSModule 1 (1ects):- The crystalline nature of metals- Metallographic methods- Phases and phase coordination diagrams, alloys, solifidicationModule 2 (1ects):- Deformation of metals and alloys- Methods of strengthening metals, kinetics- Stress relief, recrystallization Module 3 (1ects):- Mechanical properties, destructive testing- Non destructive testingModule 4 (1ects):- Ferrous and nonferrous engineering alloys- Heat treatment of steel, theoretical basis- Aluminium and aluminium alloysOTHER MATERIALS:Module 5 (1ects):- Polymers - an introduction - Composites and ceramics, a short introduction.
Necessary mathematics and computer skills are included as appropriate with the above subjects.
