Aim

The aim of the course is to provide a basic understanding of selection and use of engineering materials. The relationship between structure, properties and processing, and testing of engineering materials.

Content

Module 1 (1 ECTS):
- The crystalline nature of metals
- Metallographic methods
- Phases and phase coordination diagrams, alloys, solifidication
Module 2 (1 ECTS):
- Deformation of metals and alloys
- Methods of strengthening metals, kinetics
- Stress relief, recrystallization
Module 3 (1 ECTS):
- Mechanical properties, destructive testing
- Non destructive testing
Module 4 (1 ECTS):
- Ferrous and nonferrous engineering alloys
- Heat treatment of steel, theoretical basis
Module 5 (1 ECTS):
- Aluminium and aluminium alloys - an introduction
- Polymers - an introduction
